The couple were married by proxy because it was illegal for Maura to enter Venezuela as a single woman, where Declan was working with Texaco at the time. Although they were technically already married when this photo was taken, the religious ceremony was important to the young couple and they did not considered themselves married until the marriage had been blessed in a church.
