Maura Garvey married Declan Gilroy in 1959 by proxy, it was and still is the only proxy marriage to happen in the Republic of Ireland. The couple were married by proxy because it was illegal for Maura to enter Venezuela as a single woman, where Declan was working with Texaco at the time.
