Postcard sent by Albert Rowe from the Somme during the First World War.

Postcard belonging to Albert Rowe, Sergeant with 122 Battery, 18th (later 52nd Brigade) of the 5th Division of the Royal Field Artillery. Albert was stationed in Dundalk at the outbreak of the war. He left his family in Barrack Street, Dundalk on the 14th of August 1914. The postcard is marked in the top left marking out “& my stables”. Albert operated a Howitzer gun and was involves in some of the earliest battles of the First World War. He was awarded the Mons Medal at the start of the war. He was later injured by shrapnel and also contracted TB in the trenches. HIs widow mary argued with Ministry to attempt to secure a pension after his death in 1925 with no success. Stricken by grief Mary died of heart failure withn a year of Albert’s death in her early 40’s.
